This set of 6 artifacts, includes hand axes, choppers, a cleaver and spheroid tool from Africa, dated from 1.5 mya to 1.2 mya. An excellent collection of hominid tools at a lesser price then the individual specimens purchased separately. Individual pieces are available separately. Please see the chart below.
Oldowan Spheroid Tool - A common object at many sites at Olduvai Gorge, but there is no agreement on its use. Louis Leakey thought they might have been tied together in threes, like a "bolo", and thrown around the legs of prey. A more likely use is that they were pounding stones to break down vegetable material or break into bones for marrow. East Africa, dated to c. 1.75 mya.
Acheulean Cleaver - A typical tool of the Acheulean tool kit, the flat end was probably used to scrape meat from bones, or flesh from hides; also to chop wood. East Africa, dated to c. 1.2 mya
Acheulean Hand Axe - The definitive tool of the Acheulean. Although the size varies, the ovoid shape and the proportions remain very consistent over all of Africa, Europe and the Middle East, for more than a million years. Their use is controversial. Edge wear analysis shows that some were used for ordinary purposes like cutting meat and wood. However, the consistent shape and proportions over such a long period have led some to claim that they were missiles; that they were thrown. My own research at UCLA, having students throw actual hand axes [not casts], has shown that they have some very real aerodynamic properties and with only a little practice, a student with a strong arm can quickly become fairly proficient at hitting a target. East Africa, dated to c. 1.2 mya.
