Human Adult Female Femur, Osteoporosis Comparative Set KO-170-SET This comparative pair of femurs illustrates that the condition created by osteoporosis is not detectable by merely looking at the outside of the bone; instead, a bone density test would reveal the loss of bone mass. The osteoporotic bone seems identical to the healthy femur until one picks it up and compares its weight (147 grams) to that of the healthy femur (261 grams). We took these weights from the measurements of the natural bones of which we made casts. Contains KO-170 and SC-211-F |

Human Adult Female Femur, Osteoporosis KO-170 This femur is custom-made to represent a female femur affected by osteoporosis. Mimicking the effects of osteoporosis, we have reduced the weight of this bone (from that of a healthy 261 grams to 147 grams). Loss of bone mass in the femoral head creates a greater likelihood of hip fracture. Osteoporosis is sometimes confused with osteoarthritis. While osteoporosis involves a loss of bone mass, osteoarthritis, a joint disease, involves the loss of cartilage separating and cushioning the connection between two bones. As a result, the bones rub together painfully and visible bone spurs may result. |
