Human Female American Indian Skull BC-213 This skull is typical of a southwestern American Indian. It has broad, flattened, forward-projecting zygomas. The facial bones are vertically aligned with a shallow nasal depression, a moderate nasal spine, an orthognathic jaw, and a vertical chin. The cranium is rounded (not high or long), with bulbous parietals and a complicated lambdoid suture. The orbits are rounded or squared (not rectangular) and the zygomaxillary suture is relatively straight (not jagged). The palate is wide and smoothly curved, supporting an elliptical dental row. The ascending ramus of the mandible is broad with a slightly everted gonial angle. Both metric and non-metric analysis show this skull to be a good example of mixed sexual traits and ambiguous sexual designation. The dental condition is interesting because it provides examples of antemortem and postmortem tooth loss, extreme dental attrition (wear) with dentinal sclerosis, supereruption, drift and displacement. There is also evidence of alveolar abscesses, alveolar resorption, and temporomandibular joint degeneration. Stand, S-BC-213, is available for an additional charge.
