Human Male African-American Skull BC-203 The totality of the features of this skull is in keeping with an African ancestry. These features include a projecting profile, a depressed nasal root, an obtuse nasal angle, a short anterior nasal spine, a bilateral gutter at the lower part of the nasal aperture, a somewhat rectangular-shaped palate, and blade-like incisors in the upper jaw. It is important to recognize, however, that the concept of race assessment remains controversial. While an examination of the pelvis is important for determining sex, in many circumstances that determination can be made by reference to the skull alone. Features of this skull which suggest male are a square chin, a broad ascending mandibular ramus, somewhat rough nasion, rounded supraorbital margins, and moderate prominence of the cranial sites for musculofascial attachment including the nuchal lines, the mastoid processes, the temporal lines, and the external occipital protuberance. |
