Harpy eagles are the heaviest of the world's raptors. Females may achieve weights of up to 18 pounds. They are equipped with short, broad wings in order to rapidly shift their massive bodies as they fly through the dense forest habitats while hunting their prey. Their powerful legs and long sharp talons make short work of the variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles they hunt in the large 7-8 square mile territories needed to support them. Their heavy and strongly hooked beak is also an essential tool needed to tear into and shred the tough sinewy sloth carcasses that comprise a large portion of their diet.
