Wattled Crane Leg KO-134 Wattled Cranes, the largest of the crane species in Africa at 6 feet tall and 14 pounds, occur in the wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa. They are also the rarest species of crane in Africa with a population estimated at under 15,000. The underparts and wings are black while the breast and neck are white. Between the eyes and long bill, the skin is red and covered with little bumps. Hanging beneath the head are wattles, which lengthen when the crane appears aggressive.
