Short-Faced Bear Canine Teeth (pair) KO-115P The teeth of Arctodus simus are reminiscent of those of the lion. With large widely-spaced canines, useful for ripping skin and flesh, this bear seems to have been a true carnivore. Arctodus simus, the Short-Faced Bear, became extinct approximately 11,000 years ago. The individual from which this tooth came (see BC-114) died approximately 28,000 years ago and was found in Alaska. Other specimens have been found in several locations from Mexico to Alaska. These bears were extremely large and weight estimates have been in excess of 1300 lbs. Given its size and speed, it's likely to have acquired most of its food by scavenging rather than hunting. We are grateful to the Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for the opportunity to cast this individual. Short-Faced Bear Canine Teeth (single) KO-115S |
