During the Spring and Summer months, its diet consists of buds, leaves, flowers, berries and nuts. In contrast, its Winter diet is mainly evergreen needles and the inner bark of trees. When approached by enemies, this animal quickly turns its back , raises its 3 inch quills in a threatening gesture and lashes out with its tail.
