Whirltooth Shark Teeth in Matrix Replica KO-001 Very little is known about this unusual shark, except the front teeth grew in a spiral, containing up to 180 teeth. This particular specimen contains 131 teeth. It is hypothesized that, unlike most sharks, it retained its teeth even after growing new ones. It lived 280 million years ago (Lower Permian). This cast is from the original Holotype, first described in 1899 and discovered in the Arta Beds from the Ural Region of Russia. It is of the class Chondrichthyes (sharks and rays), the order Eugeneodontida and the family Agassizodontae. Courtesy of Dr. Gordon Hubbell. Whirltooth Shark Teeth Larger Image.
