Sabertooth Cat Hoplophoneus occidentalis Skull in matrix CB-17 Hoplophoneus occidentalis was one of the largest Nimravids of the Oligocene, approaching that of the extant jaguar. It is a very rare species. This particular specimen was cast in matrix, using stone-like casting materials to simulate the weight and appearance of the original. We are grateful to the Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for the opportunity to cast this individual. Hoplophoneus occidentalis Skull Larger Image.
