Alligator Snapping Turtle Skull BC-271 The largest of the North American freshwater turtles, the Alligator Snapping Turtle may grow to 200 pounds and a shell length over 2 feet. Sometimes referred to as the "dinosaur of the turtle world," it is easily identified by the three prominent ridges that are visible down the length of the shell and by the eyes on the side of its big head. The turtle will remain motionless with its mouth wide-open tempting fish to come for the worm-like piece of flesh that projects from its tongue. Its powerful jaws quickly close on its prey. In addition to fish, the turtle will eat frogs, snakes, snails, crawfish and other turtles. |
