Black Spider Monkey Skull BC-265 The Spider Monkey, which can be found in the Amazon rain forest, gets its name from the length of its spindly limbs. Weighing about 20 pounds, it grows to a length of 15-22 inches. Its prehensile tail, which is two to three feet long, can be used to hang from a tree in order to reach an outlying flower bud. It is also sensitive and flexible enough to pick a nut off the ground. Nearly always in the trees, they move across branches by running on all fours or by swinging from branch to branch in a hand over hand motion. When on the ground, they sometimes walk on their hind legs. They communicate across distances with members of their group by making a "whinnying" sound, and signal danger with a barking noise. They have the largest brain of all monkeys, relative to their body size. |
