Female Chacma Baboon Skull BC-259 The Chacma Baboon is found on the savannahs of southern Africa. A distinctive feature of this baboon is its dog-like muzzle, which motivates one of its common names, the Dog-faced Monkey. The female ranges from 16-24 inches, weighs about 35 pounds and lives for a maximum of 45 years. Troops of 40-50 members consist of adult males and females and their offspring. It's currently thought that the female has a large say in whom she mates with, often choosing multiple partners to ensure greater participation by the males in the nurturing and safe-keeping of the offspring, which may be their own. The female baboon appears to pass her social ranking on to her offspring. Female Chacma Baboon Skull Larger Image. Please Use Your Back Button To Return To This Page. |

Male Chacma Baboon Skull BC-258 The Male Chacma Baboon, much heavier than the female, weighs from 57 to 68 pounds. Able to run 35-40 mph, these primates also possess sharp hearing and eyesight, a necessity on the open savannahs. They signal threats by staring, raising their eyebrows, flattening their ears, grinding their teeth and yawning. They also communicate with growls, grunts, chattering and barks. Two baboons may touch noses in a friendly greeting. Spending most of their time on the ground, they forage for fruit, seeds, leaves, flowers and occasionally will eat animals.
