Short-eared Owl Skull BC-245 The Short-eared Owl is mottled brown and white on the upperparts and white (male) or rusty (female) with brown streaks on its underparts. It has a round face, featuring yellow eyes surrounded by black circles. This medium-sized owl (13-17 inches) can be found throughout much of North American and Eurasia in wide-open marshes, prairies, grasslands and agricultural fields. Flying close to the ground in the afternoon or at dusk or dawn, it preys on small mammals, snatching them up with its talons. Because it builds its nest on the ground, it may fall victim to larger mammals, such as coyotes, dogs, or foxes. It typically lays 4-9 eggs with an incubation period of one month. The hatched young quickly move from the vulnerable nest and fledge within one month. |
