Female African-American Human Skull BC-178 Human African-American female skull (modern specimen, North America). Cast by us from an original skull that is in a North American medical school forensic osteology teaching collection. Using metric techniques of cranial analysis, this skull was determined to be that of an African-American female. Using non-metric (morphological) analysis, the skull was deemed African-American because of the marked alveolar prognathism, flat nasal region (including the nasal root), broad nasal aperture, retreating zygoma, somewhat truncated nasal spine, and retreating forehead. There is also a subtle post-bregmatic depression, an anatomic feature supportive of African-American ancestry. Although African-American nasal fossae are typically known for their absence of a nasal sill, and the existence of a nasal gutter, this particular individual lacked those features (a finding in keeping with the fact that human morphology exists across a spectrum, and one individual rarely demonstrates features of only one particular category of race or sex). Using the knowledge that this individual was African-American, non-metric sex determination suggested the individual was female based on the relative gracility of bony prominences (including the smallish mastoid processes of the temporal bones, and the nuchal crests). There is a single frontal boss (suggestive of female sex), smooth nasion, and a rounded anteroinferior mandible. A custom Display Stand is available separately. Please see Related Products below. |
