Osprey Skull BC-166 Ospreys are one of the most abundant birds of prey living on all continents except Antarctica. Among the reasons for their success is that they are able to build their large nests practically anywhere, from high trees to buildings and cliffs in mountains, forests, near lakes and rivers. Females tend to be larger than males and have longer wingspans. They have unusually long legs and very sharp curved claws. They also dive for their main diet of fish. Ospreys have a lifespan of about 20 plus years and are mostly monogamous, although some males will breed with more than one female. They are one of the most studied birds, partly due to their abundance and because their nests are easily seen and accessed. |
