Through special arrangement with Triebold Paleontology, Inc., Bone Clones® is pleased to offer Platecarpus planifrons, a medium-sized mosasaur that lived approximately 86 MYA during the late Cretaceous Period. One of only a few known, this specimen is the best in existence. Complete with pterygoid teeth, once a P. planifrons captured its prey in its mouth, the additional set of teeth located in the upper palate helped ensure it stayed there. Platecarpus planifrons features a small number of large teeth for its skull. In addition to being the most complete planifrons skull known, this specimen features shark scavenging marks on the dorsal margin of the left surangular. The name Platecarpus comes from the Greek words; plate: meaning, "oar" and karpos: meaning "wrist, carpus" "The anterior limbs are fins, with all the elements in a single plane, the radius incapable of rotation. The humerus broad and flat." (Cope 1869) And the term planifrons indicates its flat forehead. "…the frontal bone is especially massive, and is plane on the superior surface." (Cope 1874) Our Bone Clones® replica captures all the details of this incredible creature. See related products below. |
