Columbian Mammoth Skull BC-159 Columbian Mammoths originated in Africa and entered North America around 1.7 million years ago, becoming extinct about 10,000 years ago. Standing 14 feet at the shoulder, they ranged from Alaska to Mexico. Mastodons evolved earlier and lasted longer. Mammoths, Mastodons and Elephants all belong to the group called Proboscidean, which have been around for over 50 million years. The twisted tusks identify this species. Mammoths had longer tusks than mastodons, a wider head, a sloping back, flat, chewing teeth, a trunk with two finger-like projections, and greater height. The tusks are actually very long incisors and continue to grow throughout their life. The molars wear out over time and are replaced by new ones, up to six sets throughout its life. When the last set would wear out, at around 70, the Mammoth could no longer chew and thus would die. Chosen for its quality and size, our specimen was a juvenile. The smaller size makes it more manageable for teaching as well as exhibits. The custom Display Stand as shown S-BC-159 is available separately. Special packing and shipping required. Oversize Shipping Charges Will Apply. The tusks are also available individually and as a pair. Please see below. |
