Javelina Skull BC-157E The Javelina (pronounced Ha - va - LEE - na), or Collared Peccary, is a smallish pig-like animal native to portions of South, Central and southwestern North America (and is the only pig-like wild animal native to the United States). Characteristics distinguishing peccaries from pigs are: downward pointing tusks, smaller size, longer, thinner legs, smaller hooves (with 3 hind toes rather than 4) and extremely short tail. They also have more complex stomachs. Notably, peccaries have a musk gland on their rump, and are accompanied by a strong odor (another common name for this animal is Musk Hog). Javelinas weigh about 30 lbs, have large heads, long snouts, and barrel shaped bodies covered with thick bristly gray to grizzled black hair, an indistinct, whitish marking (collar) around their neck and a mane (in adults) along their back. The Bone Clones® Economy Series - Our goal with this series is to produce affordable quality replicas for zoos, museum discovery centers, schools, artists, etc., so that a new generation of enthusiasts can learn about nature. All Bone ClonesŪ Economy Series skulls are made from the same molds, following the same procedures as our regular Bone ClonesŪ replicas except we do not tool or finish these skulls to the same detail. We still select only the finest specimens to cast, and carefully prepare each mold to capture the original's structure and texture. We presently offer some common North American animals and select human sets in this series. View The Economy Series Catalog, Click Here. |
