Barn Owl Skull BC-153 The barn owl derives its common name from its habit of nesting and roosting in secluded barn lofts, though it will take refuge in any secluded spot. It has a white, heart-shaped face, a round head and no ear tufts. With a mostly white underside and a light brown back, its medium-size body is slender, with long pointed wings that fold beyond the tail. The owl's primary flight feathers have a soft saw-toothed edge allowing for silent flight. Barn owls are found worldwide, except in extreme northern locals and New Zealand, and are common to North America, Eurasia and Africa. Its dark eyes are forward facing for binocular vision, and are rather small compared to other owls. Although it can see during daylight, it prefers to hunt from dusk on, preying primarily on small mammals such as field mice, squirrels and rabbits as well as smaller birds. Even in complete darkness, a barn owl is able to locate its prey due to an asymmetrical ear structure used to triangulate sound. Our Bone Clones® skull captures the anatomical structure and subtle textures, detail and color of the original, including the delicate sclerotic rings. See our Barn Owl Egg KO-428 and Barn Owl Talon KO-065. |
