Rhesus Macaque BC-137 Ranging throughout Asia from India to southern China, humans are the only primate species with a broader geographic range than Rhesus Macaques. A medium-sized simian, adult males can weigh up to 20 pounds while females may weigh 10-14 pounds. They are highly adaptable and depending on their habitat can be primarily terrestrial or arboreal. Most wild troops are associated with human settlements in farms, temples and cities. Their diet is catholic with a wide variety of foods including fruits, grains, veggies, insects, leaves, shoots, fish and shellfish being relished. Crop raiding and other forms of stealing from humans may form over 90% of their diet. Excellent swimmers, babies as young as a few days old can swim and adults are known to swim over a half mile between islands. Rhesus Macaques are biologically very similar to people as well as hardy and adaptable, all of which has made them indispensable to medical research. Polio and smallpox vaccines are two of the many medical wonders made possible by their contributions. Rhesus Macaque Larger Image. Please Use Your Back Button To Return To This Page. |
