Common House Cat Skull BC-131 The Common House Cat originated from African Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) and has been associated with humans for over 9,500 years. Their domestication was an offshoot of their value for ridding human grain storage areas of large numbers of rats and mice. The cats were drawn to the concentration of vermin and the farmers eventually saw their value as "partners" in pest control and less as a threat to their small livestock. Cats are obligate carnivores and cannot sustain themselves without animal protein. There are 30 to 40 breeds of domestic felines recognized by the various registries. The breeds differ in size, body form, color, skull shape, hair length and temperament. The average house cat weighs 5-16 pounds and may live over 15 years. |
