20 Inch Alligator Skull BC-129 Alligators have been around for over 200 million years and are integral to the health of their wetland homes. Their presence insures a healthy environment for many plants and animals. Their large heads have dorsally placed eyes, ears and nostrils that are adapted for a semi-submerged lifestyle. Their heads are also covered with small dermal pressure receptors in their skin, which can detect even the slightest changes in water pressure. This adaptation helps them "feel" the presence of prey even in murky water in the dark of night. They have 70-80 sharp conical teeth which, coupled with powerful jaw muscles, can exert a bite force of 2,000 pounds per square inch, one of the strongest recorded bites in the animal kingdom. |
