Walrus Skull with Tusks BC-108 The thick-skinned walrus may weigh approximately 900 to 3,500 pounds, with males being larger than females. The tusks of a walrus can grow up to one meter long. These tusks have many uses: fighting, eating, cutting ice, and allowing them to remain stable while asleep by being hooked over ice. They have a pair of air sacs in their neck that helps them float in the water. With distribution throughout the Arctic, they feed largely on bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Their lifespan in the wild may reach 40 years. Walrus Skull Larger Image. Please Use Your Back Button To Return To This Page. |
