12 Inch Alligator Skull BC-105 All alligators (the American and Chinese species) are crocodilians. In 1967 American alligators were one of the first animals to be listed as an endangered species. Their population recovered to the extent that they were removed from the list. Males grow to 10 to 15 feet on average and weigh 1,000 pounds, while females are significantly smaller. The snout of an alligator is broader than that of a crocodile. Its lower teeth fit into sockets in the upper jaw and remain completely hidden when their mouth is closed, while both the upper and lower teeth of a crocodile are visible at all times. In the wild the alligator is thought to live between 35 to 50 years. |
