American Black Bear Skull BC-099 Found from Alaska to Mexico, the American Black Bear thrives. Reaching 6 feet and over 300 pounds, they are skillful climbers and can run up to 25 miles per hour. Smaller and more common than the Brown Bear, they have long snouts, small eyes, and rounded ears. The shaggy coat of the American Black Bear actually may be colored from blond to dark brown in various regions of the continent. Usually feeding on berries, nuts and plants, they will also consume small rodents and carrion when available. Generally regarded as not threatening to humans, they may become aggressive to protect themselves or their young. In cold regions, they will hibernate throughout the winter months. Every two to three years, a female will give birth during the winter hibernation period. Learning how to find food and shelter, the cubs remain with her through the next winter. |
