The word peregrine is Latin for 'wanderer' and is an apt description for this raptor, which may migrate over 15,000 miles in a year. Peregrines are the best-known species of falcon, having been used for hunting for hundreds of years, and now are celebrated urban inhabitants, nesting on the ledges of tall buildings in many of the world's largest cities. Females are called falcons and are always about 1/3 larger than their lifelong mates, called tiercels. Peregrine falcons prey on over 250 species of birds worldwide. Their large eyes provide acute vision and are aided by the hinged brows on their skull to help shield their eyes from the sun's glare. Their long pointed wings, long tail, and large feet equipped with sharp talons enable them to swiftly stoop at over 200 mph and snatch their prey out of the sky with dazzling speed.
