Goliath Frog Skull BC-094 Goliath frogs inhabit swiftly flowing rivers in the dense humid rain forests of coastal Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Weighing up to 7 pounds, they measure 12.5 inches from snout to vent and almost 3 feet when outstretched. The large well-muscled hind limbs are almost 2 feet long with large strongly webbed feet. In spite of the adult's huge size, eggs and tadpoles are no larger than that of any smaller species of frog but the Goliath frog's tadpoles are said to grow faster than any other amphibian for 30 days in the middle of their metamorphosis. These frogs eat insects, crustaceans, and fish, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. In the 1980s Goliath frogs received worldwide attention when several were entered in the Celebrated Jumping Frog Contest of Calaveras County, California. Resident competitors with American Bull frogs and Green frogs vilified the Goliath frogs as athletic ringers with prodigious jumping abilities. They also expressed concern that the Goliath frogs would eat their prized "athletes." After all was said and done, the Goliath frogs were apparently too heavy or too exhausted from their arduous trip from Africa to make much of a showing at the contest. From our skeleton SC-094. |
