Black-footed Ferret Skull BC-055 One of the most endangered mammals in North America, the Black-footed Ferret belongs to the family of mustelids. Other members of this family, which typically have a long body supported by short legs and a scent gland under the tail, are sea otters, weasels, minks and badgers. There were only 18 individuals in 1986, but slowly their numbers have been increasing. While several hundred of them now live in the wild, a healthier number of the species faces obstacles including habitat destruction, disease and poisoning. |
