Gibbon Skull BC-047 "Hylobates" is Latin meaning "dweller of the trees." Gibbons possess both some of the primitive characteristics of monkeys and some of the most advanced skeletal adaptations of all hominoids. They are the most successful of the hominoids and second only in relative body size to the great apes, so are more correctly referred to as "small apes" rather than "lesser apes," as they have been called in the past. Their skulls exhibit no sexual dimorphism and have the forward facing, wide-set eyes, short rostrum, and globular, larger brain case typical of most hominoids. They have 32 teeth. Their simple molars have rounded cusps, their anterior premolars are long and shear shaped, while their incisors are broad and sectorial. The long, pointed canines also exhibit virtually no sexual dimorphism unlike that found in the great apes and most monkeys. Their mandible is relatively shallow with a broad ascending ramus to accommodate the modified larynx needed for their loud territorial vocalizations. The vocal sac is almost as large as the head of some species. |
