x-large Male Gorilla Skull BC-036 Gorillas are the largest of the world primates. The adult male gorilla stands 4 to 6 feet tall when standing erect on slightly bowed legs. Wild males can weigh between 300 and 400 pounds. Gorillas are enormously strong with compact bodies and wide chests. A large adult male may have an arm span over 8.5 feet and a chest circumference of almost 60 inches. They have broad shoulders, thick muscular biceps, and forearms longer than their upper arms. Gorillas have large hands and feet with strong thick fingers and toes. Their arms are significantly longer than their thick legs. Gorillas are primarily terrestrial but they are excellent climbers, even large males being known to climb high in sturdy trees while feeding. Gorillas have large heads with prominent brow ridges, a forward-projecting jaw, forward-facing wide-set eyes, very small ears and a wide flat nose with broadly flared nostrils. Like fingerprints, their nose prints are unique. Adult gorillas have 32 teeth. Both sexes have sharp prominent canines but the males are proportionately larger. Their molars are broad and flat in keeping with their tough fibrous, primarily vegetarian diet. Original skull is courtesy of the Philadelphia Zoo. |
