Male Mandrill Baboon Skull BC-010 Mandrills are the world's largest simian species with adult males achieving weights of 120 pounds. Male mandrills are also arguably the most colorful of all primates. They have a bright red stripe running down the middle of their muzzle and winding around both nostrils, reddish-colored fur above both eyes, and a jaunty yellow beard. The sides of their muzzle are strongly ridged and colored a bright blue. Their hairless rump ranges from a bright blue to purple. A male mandrill will assemble a harem of females over which he will maintain exclusive breeding rights. Male mandrills are also notable for their impressive 2 to 3 inch long canine teeth. They have the intimidating habit of yawning when threatened or upset in order to show their opponents their formidable weaponry. Male Mandrill Baboon Skull Larger Image. Female Mandrill Baboon Skull BC-261 Female Mandrill Baboons are about half the size of their male counterparts and have much duller colors. Both sexes have a mane covering their neck and shoulders. They are terrestrial omnivores, venturing into the trees only at night, primarily in areas where they may fall prey to leopards. Despite their enormous canines, they are primarily fruit-eaters. Although they are sometimes called the forest baboon, Mandrills along with their close relative, the Drill, belong to their own genus, Mandrillus. They occur in tropical forests of western equatorial Africa. Female Mandrill Baboon Skull Larger Image. Please Use Your Back Button To Return To This Page. |
