Fruit Bat skull BC-007 This small skull comes from the largest of the bat family. There are over 154 species of Old World fruit bats existing worldwide - many of which are endangered. This Old World fruit bat is also known as a flying fox. Its 16 inch body supports a wingspan of over 5 feet. Bats are the only mammals to have evolved true flight. Arboreal creatures, these bats sleep in colonies and emerge at dawn and dusk to feed solely on fruit. Because of this, they cannot be imported into the United States for fear they may damage fruit crops. |
