Adult Male Chimpanzee Skull BC-003 Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, our genetic ties being far closer than those that chimps share with gorillas. We share 96 to 99.5% of our genetic material. Recent genetic interpretations (Feb. 2007) suggest that Chimpanzees and humans split from a common ancestor as recently as 4 million years ago and that it took only 400,000 years for humans to become a separate species from our common chimpanzee-human ancestor. Native to the African rainforest, this social, diurnal animal weighs up to 120 lbs. and grows up to 5 1/2 feet tall. A robust and lively ape, the Chimpanzee is capable of insight and has the ability to create and use tools. Adult Male Chimpanzee Skull Larger Image.
