Orangutan Borneo Male Skull BC-002B Borneo and Sumatra Orangutans diverged about 1.5 million years ago and are classified as distinct species. Borneo Orangutans, as the name suggests, originate on the island of Borneo and are divided into 3 subspecies. More numerous than the Sumatran species, they are still endangered with an estimated 20,000 remaining in the wild. Adult Borneo males also have larger flanges of spongy tissue on either side of their face, called cheek pads, and a larger more pendulous throat sac, which serves as a resonator for their loud, roaring, territorial "long call." The laugh of a large male Orangutan is also a low and highly resonating roaring sound, while that of the females and babies is more of a high-pitched squeak. Wild adult males can weigh up to 200 pounds and have an arm span of over 7 feet. A custom metal display stand, S-BC-002B, is also available.

Orangutan Borneo Female Skull BC-255 The Orangutan is the only member of the great apes to originate from Asia. Also unlike the other great apes, the Orangutan generally lives a solitary life, the exception being the extended relationship between the mother and its offspring. Females give birth once every 8 years or so, nursing the offspring until the age of six and continuing to teach the young how to live on their own for a few more years. Females are significantly smaller than the males, weighing about half as much. The only truly arboreal ape, the orangutan is the largest animal living in the forest canopy, and rarely descends to the ground. Incapable of knuckle-walking like the great apes of Africa, orangutans keep their hands and feet curled up when moving on the ground. Please see Related Products for other orangutan skulls, skeleton and postcranial bones. A custom metal display stand, S-BC-255, is also available.
